depositは、
つまるところ、
money
です。
そして、その支払先と使い方によって大きく3つの意味があります。
①in bank account
②seller、hotel etc
③lessor
の3つで理解すると分かりやすいです。
lessorとは、賃貸借契約における貸手のことです。

depositは①〜③で共通するのは、
money
という点です。
①に関しては、保管場所が、
bank account
です。
(accountとは、moneyをkeep、leaveしたrecordです。銀行口座です。)
②に関しては、まさに
small
かつ
first
のpaymentです。
家や車の手付金やホテルの預かり金です。
③は日本の不動産賃貸における
敷金
と同じ意味です。
敷金のように、賃貸している部屋を出る時、修繕の必要などがなければ返却されるお金です。
①〜③(特に②と③)は、
money
という点で共通するとともに、
一方通行の支払いではなく、
back
されるイメージを持っています。
